Description

Scanning electron micrograph of an incandescant lightbulb filament.

The structures in the foreground are tungsten oxide crystals formed by burning the filament in the presence of air (by breaking the glass and switching the power on).

The "planet" in the background is one of the turns in the filament's coils.

Original image was captured on 4x5" Polaroid Type 55. Digital image was created by scanning an 11x14 print made from the Type 55 negative (alas now long deceased).

It's crazy how textures are made up of much smaller textured surfaces.
Each tiny crystal is speckled with it's own rippled, dotted texture.

The world has so much more resolution than I can imagine...
